Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Components

For instance, a crafted glyph will boost the chances of upgrading its target, whereas an upgrade boost will increase the attack or defense property of a weapon, or armor.
Selecting an upgrade template in the GUI will let you bind it to an item. It will display the list of upgrade components that the item can be upgraded to. You can also use the workbench for selecting an upgrade template. In either case, an item will be upgraded once enough upgrade components have been gathered.
Each component has a different experience multiplier, which affects the amount of experience an item receives when it is upgraded by the component. Organic components, for instance have a higher multiplier of experience than mechanical components. It is recommended to upgrade organic components first until you reach the next rank in the weapon or equipment then switch to mechanical upgrades.
In addition to the experience multiplier Each item also comes with an maximum number of upgrades it can receive. The number of upgrades are determined by the upgradeable rank and the upgrade type of the upgradeable item. The most powerful upgrade is a weapon with the tier 10. However, the most common upgrades for weapons are a tier 6 weapon and a tier 5 armor upgrade.
Sets
A set is a group of items which share bonuses. Each item can be upgraded at the least once. The upgrade boosts the bonuses that are guaranteed. The first time you upgrade an item, its initial stat will be +1.
